BUILT-UP ROOFING is a roof system built with multiple layers (typically 4) of hot asphalt and fiberglass roofing felt.
- Is by far the oldest roofing system around. When properly installed, can last for 20–30 years.
- Easily and frequently applied during cold winter months.
- Suitable for heavy foot traffic or abuse.
- Surfacing can be either a flood coat of hot asphalt, a silver aluminum coating, or a gravel surface.
- Silver aluminum coating or gravel surfacing is recommended because it protects the asphalt roofing from the aging effects of the sun's UV rays — in turn, increasing the life of the roof.
- Silver aluminum coating also reflects the sun, making the interior of the building cooler during the summer months.
